How to upgrade your campsite washrooms on a budget

Clean, comfortable and high-quality campsite bathrooms are crucial for several reasons. For one thing, they impact the experience of your guests, for another, they impact health and safety, as well as the environment.

Therefore, it’s vital that you have up-to-date facilities that are easy to clean, maintain and sure to impress your guests all year round.

We understand that’s a lot to ask, which is why we’ve put together this guide on how to upgrade your campsite washrooms without breaking the bank.

Add a lick of paint

One of the most simple but effective things you can do to instantly upgrade your campsite bathrooms is to add a lick of paint. From the toilets to the shower cubicles, paint can fade, peel and become marked over time.

By refreshing the paint in these spaces, you’ll see an instant change and your campsite washrooms will feel brighter and cleaner.

Upgrade existing fixtures and fittings

If your campsite washrooms have seen better days, it doesn't have to mean a huge refurbishment project. Simply upgrading some of the most important and frequently used fixtures and fittings can quickly transform the space.

For example, changing the taps, toilet seats, hand dryers or clothes hangers. You can even modernise your washrooms by adding new, stylish touch-free technology like sensor taps and automatic lights (if you haven't already, that is).

Or, take it one step further by swapping out old, worn toilet cubicles for modern alternatives. These could be floor-to-ceiling for extra privacy or made using solid-grade laminate (SGL) cubicles for easy cleaning and an attractive finish.

Add better ventilation

If you run a busy site, you might find that your campsite toilets and shower blocks quickly become damp throughout the day. Showers, sinks and a lot of visitors can lead to moisture build-up, which in turn, can lead to mould or dampness on the walls and ceiling.

Over time, this makes your campsite washrooms look dirty and dingy. So, if this is a recurring problem in your bathrooms, it’s a good idea to increase ventilation.

You can do this by adding more vents or having more windows put in. This can allow for better airflow, and more natural light and can make your campsite washrooms generally a more comfortable environment.

Prioritise maintenance and hygiene

Sometimes, the key to improving campsite toilets is putting maintenance and hygiene at the forefront of everything you do. Although stylish bathrooms are also important, they can get away with being relatively basic provided they are always clean, comfortable and accessible.

For example, our SGL toilet cubicles have fewer joints and fewer places for bacteria to build up. They are also sanitised with an antibacterial treatment that can eliminate 99% of germs.

These are not only more sanitary but also easier to clean and maintain in the long run. The panels can also help to hide unsightly and unhygienic pipework, making your campsite washrooms feel sleeker, cleaner and more modern.

Get creative with signage and decoration

Sometimes, just a few decorative touches can be all it takes to make a significant difference to your campsite bathrooms. For example, adding some colourful signage, artwork, branded accessories or greenery like indoor plants.

You could even add some outdoor decorations around the washrooms to make the area more inviting and pleasant for campers, such as planters or seating areas.

Add some colourful features for younger guests

If your campsite aims to please younger guests, why not add fun, themed appliances and wall panels to your bathrooms or shower blocks? These could feature animals, nature or space-related motifs.

You could even have custom designs or images created if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

Used recycled or reclaimed materials

Look for inexpensive or free materials to add some attractive but environmentally friendly features to your campsite bathrooms. This could be reclaimed wood for shelving, industrial pipes for handrails and hanging space or old pots you can use to add plants to these spaces.

Not only is this environmentally friendly, but it can also save you money and help to boost your brand. This can be particularly beneficial if you prioritise sustainability and recycling on your campsite. Not to mention these features and accessories look great and can be a fun project!

Ask for (and implement) regular feedback

Lastly, you should encourage campers to provide feedback on your facilities, including the washrooms and showers. You can then use that information to make continuous improvements to your bathrooms over time.

Making small changes every now and then can be more budget-friendly and ensures the longevity of your campsite toilets. This iterative approach also allows you to address issues and prioritise upgrades based on real user experiences and customer preferences.

The smallest updates can make a real difference, but combining several of these strategies and thinking creatively about your washrooms means you can upgrade your campsite toilets on a budget while providing a better experience for all campers.
