Revitalising school washrooms: How warm tones create calming spaces and happy faces

For Ringstead C of E Primary School in Kettering, creating an environment that supports student well-being is the top priority. Recognising the impact that school facilities can have on a child's day-to-day comfort, the school embarked on a refurbishment project to modernise the pupil’s bathrooms.

The goal was to create a space that is not only functional but also warm, calming and welcoming - designed to make students feel at ease throughout their school day. This case study explores the process behind the refurbishment, from design choices to the positive impact it has had on both the students and staff.

How warm tones and thoughtful planning enhanced student well-being

By incorporating soothing warm-coloured tones and thoughtful design, the new washrooms now provide a comforting space where children can feel relaxed, secure and confident.

Warm tones, such as wood veneers and earthy hues, promote a sense of comfort and relaxation and are known to enhance mood and focus, making the washroom a less stressful space for students.

What’s more, the school decide to incorporate energy and water-efficient technologies throughout the bathrooms to align with green building practices and support a more sustainable and environmentally conscious school environment. For example, by installing energy-efficient water-saving devices, such as low level concealed toilet cisterns, we helped to reduce water waste by over 25%.

The school also chose surfaces that are easy to clean and maintain to ensure better hygiene and help prevent the spread of germs. Materials such as non-porous wash troughs, anti-bacterial Upvc wall cladding and PUR (polyurethane reinforced coating) safety flooring. The smooth, non-porous surface of the flooring makes it easy to clean and maintain, plus, it resists dirt and stains, contributing to a more hygienic environment.

Using high-quality, easy-to-clean materials ensures the washroom remains in good condition over time, reducing the need for frequent refurbishments and lowering long-term costs something which is important in an educational setting.

We would like to thank Ringstead Primary School for entrusting us with this project and the opportunity to transform their school washrooms. Our goal was to create an environment that reflects the school’s unwavering commitment to excellence and student well-being and we are thrilled to have contributed to a space that supports comfort, hygiene and positive experiences for the children.

It has been an honour to collaborate on this project, and we take immense pride in delivering innovative design solutions that enhance both the functionality and atmosphere of these educational spaces.
